You start with the Big Five in Akagera, cross the country to track chimpanzees beneath Nyungwe’s canopy, and finish with the mountain gorillas of Volcanoes National Park. Thanks to Rwanda’s compact size, no single driving day exceeds five hours.
Itinerary
- Day 1 — Arrival in Kigali; city tour including the Genocide Memorial.
- Day 2 — Akagera National Park: morning game drive and afternoon boat safari on Lake Ihema; return to Kigali or overnight in-park.
- Day 3 — Drive south-west to Nyungwe Forest (5 hrs) via the royal palace at Nyanza. Overnight near Gisakura.
- Day 4 — Chimpanzee tracking at dawn in Cyamudongo or the main forest; afternoon canopy walkway 60 m above the forest floor.
- Day 5 — Scenic drive north along Lake Kivu’s shore to Musanze; briefing and early night.
- Day 6 — Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park, then return to Kigali (2 hrs) for your evening flight.
